I have added 6 high quality scans of Maia in Aritzia Magazine’s latest feature. She looks stunning in these new shots and hopefully the full photoshoot will be added to the gallery soon. The photoshoot itself has a gorgoeus vintage vibe to it and is a must see so click on the thumbnails below to see the images in the gallery.

DID YOU HAVE TO AUDITION FOR J. LO TO GET THE PART?
No, thank goodness! I found out about the role in Australia and flew to L.A. to audition for it. I was infatuated with the character. She’s outside of what I usually audition for: the Girl Next Door.

WHEN YOU STARTED, WERE YOU NERVOUS ABOUT PLAYING SUCH A GRITTY CHARACTER?
I had to do a lot of research and really reach out of my own comfort zone, but I connected to it because I have a close family member who was in the foster system for a while. The role had texture.

THE MATERIAL ON THE SHOW CAN GET PRETTY HEAVY. DO THOSE EMOTIONS BLEED INTO YOUR DOWNTIME ON SET?
No, it’s definitely a social set. We eat outside and hang out together and I always have a camera. I’m the picture taker. I’m always Instagramming like crazy.

CALLIE IS OFTEN STRUMMING A GUITAR ON THE SHOW. IS THAT JUST FOR EFFECT, OR DO YOU PLAY IN REAL LIFE, TOO?
Being an actor is so public. Music is a very private thing for me. Some people keep a journal. I make quite folky and simple music. I write about people I know, people I don’t know, the industry. It helps me vent some frustrations.

ARE FOLKY JAMS WHAT YOU PREFER TO LISTEN TO AS WELL?
The biggest love of my life are Morrissey and The Smiths. I’m obsessed and always will be. Morrissey is just so articulate and so clever and his voice is like velvet. I dream about him. He is always there.

ANY CHANCE YOU’LL RELEASE A RECORD IN THE FUTURE?
I’ve never thought about being a professional musician. Sometimes you need something that is just yours.

DID YOU KNOW FROM A YOUNG AGE THAT YOU WANTED TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT IN SOME FORM?
I don’t ever remember consciously thinking, “I want to be an actor.” But I grew up doing theatre. That is where I felt most comfortable. I knew I wanted to perform, whether it was acting or dancing. I was a ballerina, but I got scoliosis so I couldn’t do ballet anymore. I was devastated. But then I booked Mortified and it became clear that acting was what I really wanted to do.

YOU GAINED A LOT OF ATTENTION AFTER STARRING IN TEEN BEACH MOVIE. IF YOU COULD FLASH BACK LIKE THEY DID IN THE FILM, WHICH CAST WOULD YOU LOVE TO JOIN?
Six Feet Under. That show was amazing! I would love to just soak up all of the talent. My mom and I got the DVDs and watched it in full in just a few weeks and our whole The Fosters crew all worked on that show so I’m like, dying everyday.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE STRANGEST PLACE YOU’VE BEEN RECOGNIZED?
I was in an airport bathroom recently and in the next stall I heard this little voice say, “Are you Maia Mitchell?” I was like, “Uh no, sorry.” Then I just up and left. It was just too awkward…!

ARE YOU EASILY EMBARRASSED?
I recently went to see my first musical: Newsies on Broadway. The Fosters cast got to go up on stage afterward and it was so embarrassing because I was dressed in these dark green Capri boyfriend jeans and a white, collared shirt. I looked at the posters and realized I was dressed like a 12-year-old paperboy. Then they gave us the newsboy caps and my cast wouldn’t stop making fun of me! But it’s ok. I keep it very casual.
